Joao Félix decided to change Benfica for Atletico Madrid. The Spaniards paid 120 million euros for him.
Carvalhal, one of the Portuguese League coaches, believes Joao Félix was not a good choice for Atletico: "I'm not sure if Atletico's way of playing is the best for him..." he told 'Play Fútbol' of 'Cadena SER'.
"If I went to a team like Real Madrid, he would be playing at a higher level. The context would be more favorable for Joao Felix," said the Rio Ave.
But he made it clear that this is a simple assessment. "I do not want to create controversy. He's a great player, he has an incredible coach. Diego Pablo Simeone is a great coach and his team is very strong, very competitive... but Joao Felix doesn't seem like the perfect player to be there," he analysed.
"This is not a criticism of Simeone. There is no doubt what he has achieved, his work speaks for him. I just don't think it was the best decision," he went on to say.
If he had opted for another team like Madrid, Carvalhal believes we would have seen another Joao Felix: "In another context, we would have enjoyed a great Joao Felix. It's going to be a bit difficult now... he's going to need more time," he continued.
The signing of Joao Felix is still a talking point in Portugal. Benfica's president defended the deal recently: "Either it's envy or they're just talking badly about one of Europe's most precious sales."
