Brentford striker Ivan Toney was suspended for eight months after betting. His sentence was reduced as it was originally going to be 11 months after a psychiatrist diagnosed him with a gambling addiction.
Toney broke the FA's rules on betting 262 times, meaning the federation had no alternative than to ban him from playing football and training with club Brentford for eight months.
The FA revealed on Friday the reasons behind the sanction and exlained that it was initially going to be harsher (11 months), but after a psychiatrist analysed the player, they realised that he had an addiction to gambling and that he needed professional help. Toney admitted lying in his first meetings with the FA and claimed that he has now stopped betting on football matches, but not other sports, with him promising to commit to overcome his addiction with treatment.
Despite the sanction, which won't allow Toney to play for his side until 2024, Brentford have committed to helping him and are even in talks to renew his contract.
