"It's a sporting decision, I simply believe that choosing him would not be good for the national team. I consider things in terms of what I think is best for the French national team and what this shirt represents, that's all", Didier Deschamps said in a documentary broadcast by 'TF1' after France's victory over Iceland.
After the 'Valbuena case' exploded, Benzema was no longer an option for Deschamps. He wasn't called up for UEFA EURO 2016 and the striker said the coach had given in to "a racist part of France" by not calling him up.
The Real Madrid striker is in good form at the moment. Deschamps was questioned again on Benzema's accusations, "There is only one truth in life. There can be various versions, but only one truth. I have a lot of problems with those who want to believe what the truth is. It's beyond understanding, I'm not in football for that," he said.
France leads their group, together with Turkey. Benzema is Madrid's highest goalscorer in La Liga, with 6 goals. But France want to continue without him.
