It was a game billed as the most important Milan derby in ten years with both sides finally back up fighting for position at the business end of the table after a period in the wilderness. Unfortunately for those making up the record attendance at San Siro, it did not live up to the expectations.
Gonzalo Higuain was absent throughout, isolated from his midfield and almost without service as Milan struggled to build any real attacks. Inter fared better, with de Vrij hitting the post and forcing a decent save out of Donnarumma with headed efforts.
Aside from that the most exciting moments were two disallowed goals, one for each side. Mauro Icardi thought he had given Inter the lead after nine minutes only to be adjudged offside after officials declared the ball took a touch off Matias Vecino on its way through to him.
Milan’s, at the end of the first half, was a much more straightforward decision. Mussacchio was a good yard offside when the ball was played through to him following a set piece and the flag was straight up.
Neither side was able to improve in the second half. Inter were struggling for fitness with several players coming back from the international break in need of a rest. Milan simply didn’t look at the races.
A draw would certainly have been a fair result, but unfortunately for the ‘Rossoneri’, if you give Icardi a chance he will take it. Deep into the three minutes added on, Vecino’s cross was misjudged by Donnarumma and Icardi was left with an open goal.
He took the chance with ease and San Siro erupted. Luciano Spalletti had said before the game that you can forget your wife’s birthday, but you never forget the date of the derby. Milan fans will do their best, but this is one that will live long in the memory of their neighbours.
