At 31, Josip Ilicic is a great Serie A footballer. He has been there for a decade and has always scored goals. But he may have had the game of his life against Torino.
For various reasons, but he hit the headlines with one goal in particular. At 0-3, just after the start of the second half, he showed quick thinking and great vision.
Atalanta were awarded a free-kick on the halfway line and Ilicic decided to take it quickly. He ran and belted the ball over the Torino keeper and into the back of the net. Sirigu in the Torino goal was outside of his penalty area. He hit it so hard and accurately that Sirigu was a mere spectator.
Seconds later, the Slovenian scored once again to get his third of the night and there were still 35 minutes left to play!
It was not just a tremendous night for Ilicic, but also for Atalanta. They were unstoppable going forward. The 0-4 goal meant Gasperini's men had scored with four of their 10 shots and nine of those were on target.
In fact, the rout continued towards the back end of the match. Luis Muriel joined in the fun by scoring two goals in the 86th and 88th minutes to make it 0-7, one of the biggest thrashings in Serie A history.
