With Javier Tebas at the forefront, La Liga decided to take the floor and posititioned itself against the European Super League in a press conference this Thursday. Alongside the organisation were all the clubs that form part of La Liga and Segunda - apart from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico.
Before starting the virtual press conference in which some of La Liga club's presidents were in attendance - such as Villarreal, Valencia, Real Betis - La Liga released an official statement.
The 39 La Liga clubs that weren't invited to take part in the European Super League rejected unanimously and forcefully the Super League format, during the meeting arranged by Javier Tebas' organisation.
"The present clubs at the meeting unanimously and strongly rejected the plans for this competition. All clubs firmly believe in sporting merit as the sole criteria to qualify to international club competitions through domestic leagues", the statement read.
After this, Tebas took the floor and wanted to begin the press conference before receiving questions: "The Super League is collapsing like a stack of cards. The negative aspect is the message it has given. They cannot tell us that they are going to save us from collapse, because that is not true. Nor that they don't harm the national competitions. They do it, both in an economic and sporting manner, In the meritocracy. And lastly, if it was such a good idea, they wouldn't have done it so secretively".
The entrepeneur from Huesca acknowledged that the likelihood of dialogue isn't great. "There was a dialogue until Friday. They had voted on the reform of the Champions League and, not long after, released the statements on Sunday. But some clubs didn't like the new Champions League format and they decided to re-invent the system".
"It had happened before but had never been carried out like this time. They hadn't consulted with the community. The biggest problem isn't more money for the players that would allow them to have seven Ferraris instead of six. It's a problem of distribution. My position is always very clear: it's not a problem of income, but of streamling expenditures" he added.
Tebas also referenced the change of opinion of Barca president Joan Laporta: "Two weeks ago, in his election campaign, he thought differently, but now he seems to be the biggest defender. The Super League is basically finished. He should concentrate more on the financial problems that he has to manage."
"I think we have to take protective measures so that this doesn't happen again, rather than sanctionary measures," clarified the La Liga president, who also spoke about the audiences in the different competitions and made a strange comparison.
"Every market is different. In Spain an Eibar-Osasuna is much more appealing than a Manchester United-Everton. Here a Villarreal-Sevilla is five times more interesting than a United-City. Two weeks ago, Barcelona played Valladolid on Monday. Real Madrid-Liverpool had only 100,000 more spectators than the Barca-Valladolid. They are statistics. This is reality", he settled.
One of the last questions asked regarded whether he felt betrayed, to which he responded: "You already know that they are working in secrecy, so it doesn't surprise you. The declarations from the Real Madrid president stating that he was the saviour of football, that did suprise me. There they certainly betrayed us and disrespected us all. Regarding Atletico Madrid, they're no longer in the Super League. Unlike Laporta, who continues to say that it is necessary."
