'I'm afraid to walk in the street out of shame'

It hasn't gone unnoticed at the Camp Nou that Gomes has been playing with a certain degree of fear. A fear of failure which is inhibiting his performances for the Catalan giants.

He isn't the footballer who wowed crowds at Valencia and things have deteriorated so much that Barcelona fans have started jeering him during matches.

Head coach Ernesto Valverde has come to the midfielder's defence, who has always acted graciously over the matter, even thanking fans for their support after his appearance in the game against Atletico Madrid. 

However, now Gomes has decided to speak out about his struggles to 'Panenka', revealing: "Maybe it's not the best word but [life at Barca] has become a bit of a hell, because I started to feel the pressure.

"The feeling that I have during games is bad. Thinking too much hurts me, because I think about the bad things. Although my team mates support me a lot, things don't go for me how they want them to go.

He added: "On more than one occasion I have not wanted to leave the house. People look at you and I'm afraid to walk in the street out of shame".

Since moving from his fellow La Liga outfit in 2016, Gomes has made 72 appearances for 'Los Cules', scoring just three goals but has only started four league games this season and looks likely to leave the club once the transfer window opens.
