Last August, a report was published between La Liga and the Royal Federation of Spanish Football which detailed an increase of 10% in referees' salaries, after the introduction of VAR.
They are unofficial employees of the Royal Federation of Spanish Football, and it is for that reason that the management of La Liga, which represents them, has been hit with large economic costs that could reach 1.9 million euros, says 'Sport'.
The recent 10% increase takes into account the new features that they have had to learn to develop with the arrival of VAR. VAR referees and their assistants earn 1600 and 800 euros, respectively.
On another note, including sponsorship from the refereeing organisation, which is divided between the officials, each one could earn up to 296,000 euros in the First Division. An figure which is far superior to those of lower league officials.
These increased salaries have also found their way into the Second Division, which is being disputed more often after increasing significantly more than in recent years. Although, the Second Division is still waiting for VAR to come into effect, which will be available for the start of the 2019/20 season.
Once it does come into effect, VAR officials in the Second Division will earn between 400 and 800 euros. The increase is a considerable one, in comparison to the annual salaries of 163,000 euros and 80,000 euros for main referees and their assistants, respectively.
