Real Madrid, the team which have won three consecutive Champions Leagues will bring an end to a season which has been fateful in every sense. They have not won any major trophy this season. The only good news was winning the Club World Cup and the return of Zidane. Maybe Barcelona not winning the treble could have pleased some Real Madrid fans, but given the season their own club has had, possibly not. At Anoeta, they lost once again.
The team, which has been all over the place for weeks, could not compete with Real Sociedad once Vallejo was sent off. The Basques were better and only Brahim and Vinicius could put on Real Madrid's fans faces. The 11th defeat in the league, the 17th in the whole season. Unthinkable stats for the reigning European champions.
Stats say that this Real Madrid is the worst of the century, practically a carbon copy of those of the 1998-99 season. They have not won away from home since 10th March, they have scored just 63 goals (25 less than Barca) and the side has conceded 44 La Liga goals. In other words, over a goal a game and changes have to be made to Zidane's squad.
If they lose against Betis, it would be the second worst season in their history with 18 losses, just one less than their worst ever season in 1984-85. To make things worse, Barcelona managed to win the league title and Atletico finished the league above them.
With just one round of fixtures left, Barca have an 18 point cushion over Real Madrid, which means Barca's biggest advantage over their big rivals in their entire history. It was 17 points in the 1984-85 season and in the last campaign. If Barcelona win at Eibar next weekend, Valverde's side would have that record.
Another reason for Zidane to get his notebook out and starts to make decision, if he has not already. It is time to bring in new faces and let certain players leave. It will not be easy in a crazy window with big money signings and plenty of chaos. It is what they have to do though after a season they will want to forget as soon as possible.
