Ian Rush, vs Luton Town in 1983
Liverpudlian Rush was an injury doubt for the fixture with Luton Town at Anfield, suffering from a groin injury sustained in a midweek cup tie with Brentford a matter of days beforehand.
However Rush was indeed cleared to play, albeit at the very last minute, and was the man of the match in a stellar individual performance. Liverpool would dismantle opponents Luton by a 6-0 scoreline, with Rush scoring all but one of the home side's goals, securing his hat-trick within 36 minutes, and he added his fourth and fifth in the second half.
After the match, while holding the match ball, Rush joked with the media: "The lads say I’ve got so many I can open up a sports shop. I came here not expecting to play, but at five o’clock I’d got five goals. It was unbelievable."
Tony Woodcock, vs Aston Villa 1983
Not to be outdone by his England teammate. Tony Woodcock scored his quintet of top-flight goals on the very same day as Rush, on an historic afternoon in English football.
Arguably, Woodcock's achievement was more impressive, as his five goals for Arsenal came away from home, in a 6-2 hammering of Aston Villa at Villa Park.
Like Rush, Woodcock was also an injury doubt for this particular match, as he had sat out the previous three weeks with a hamstring injury, which he suffered on international duty that October. However, Woodcock was determined to get his share of the limelight, as he displayed potency and skill in scoring five goals for the 'Gunners' in a memorable victory.
Andy Cole, vs Ipswich Town 1995
In an almost guaranteed win for Manchester United, who came into the fixture in fine form, and with the extra might of being the reining Premier League champions, Andy Cole would write his own piece of history at Old Trafford that day.
The forward managed to score five goals in an eventual 9-0 demolition of Ipswich Town, which turned into a very long afternoon for the visiting 'Tractor boys' players, manager and fans alike.
The match entered into its final ten minutes with Cole still on four goals, as it seemed that the striker would walk away with the match ball, but without a Premier League record. Yet the England man would not be denied, scoring his fifth goal in the 89th minute to cap off an excellent individual and team performance for United.
Alan Shearer, vs Sheffield Wednesday 1999
The Geordie icon scored five goals in an 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday at St James Park in what was a special day for fans of the club.
Sir Bobby Robson took charge of his first match as manager of Newcastle United on that day in 1999, but the match headlines, if not the occasion, would be stolen by striker Shearer, who equalled the socring record for goals by an individual player in a single top flight match.
Shearer scored a first half hat-trick, which alongside Aaron Hughes penalty, gave the Magpies a commanding 4-0 lead at the interval.
However, Shearer and Newcastle were far from finished, as they doubled their half time tally in the second half. Shearer took home the match ball, along with a joint scoring record, after notching his 4th and 5th goals in the final ten minutes of the game.
Jermain Defoe, vs Wigan Athletic 2009
Diminutive but deadly. Defoe is perhaps one of the more underrated strikers in the history of the Premier League, but fans of Tottenham, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Bournemouth will sure recognise his goal scoring prowess.
Defoe will forever be one of the great strikers in the history of English football, and after his 5 goals in a 9-1 drubbing of Wigan at White Hart Lane in 2009, 'Spurs' fans will certainly attest to his attributes and qualities in the opposition penalty area.
Unlike some of the other players on this list, all of Defoe's goals came in the second half of the contest with the 'Latics'; he scored goals two through six for Tottenham, as they put EIGHT past Wigan in a devastating second half display.
'Spurs' would go on to finish fourth at the end of the season, pipping Manchester City to the final qualification spot for the following season's Champions League.
Dimitar Berbatov, vs Blackburn Rovers 2010
Bulgarian Berbatov was already one of the star names in the Premier League before his move to Manchester United, thanks to his stellar spell in North London with Tottenham Hostpur.
However the striker was far from finished making English top flight history, as he scored five goals in a 7-1 thrashing of Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford.
The Bulgarian opened the scoring after only 2 minutes, giving the United fans a taster of what was to come in the remainder of the match.
Berbatov scored his second just before the half hour mark, and added a second half hat-trick, to write his name into the Premier League record books.
Sergio Agüero, vs Newcastle United 2015
Having already written his name into Premier League folklore with 'That goal' against QPR on the final day of the 2011-12 season, Argentine Agüero was not content to rest on his laurels for the remainder of his Manchester City career.
Forever a victim of Agüero's ruthless scoring capacities, Newcastle United were the victims of a scoring masterclass when they visited the Etihad stadium in the 2015-16. Up to that point, Agüero had already scored in four consecutive home matches against the 'Magpies', notching 5 goals in 7 games.
Yet the home game of the 2015-16 season would be marked as the striker's standout performance against Newcastle. Agüero's goal on the stroke of half time saw the sides go in level at the interval, and so it was City's second half performance that would by far separate them from the visitors.
Once again, Agüero and City stepped up another level, the Argentine scored an early second half hat-trick, before Kevin De Bruyne would add an excellent 5th for the 'Citizens'.
Then, just after the hour mark, Agüero hit his quintet of goals to end the scoring, and cap off a mesmeric 20 minute blitz, as City ran out 6-1 winners over the shellshocked Newcastle team.
