Many felt slightly surprised when Gerrard told the world that Henderson should be the man to succeed him as 'Reds' skipper, but four years after first being given the armband Henderson continues to wear it with distinction.
Speaking ahead of Sunday's heavyweight clash with Manchester United, Henderson admitted that the burden of the role has reduced with time and that he remains in contact with Gerrard to this day.
"It was a big responsibility when I first got the role but I always looked forward to it. Otherwise I wouldn’t have done it," he explained.
"I spoke to Stevie in a lot of detail before he left and still speak to him now and again. As time has gone on, it has got a lot easier. I’ve learned a lot."
Despite his huge respect for Gerrard, Henderson is keen to get one over on his former mentor by winning a Premier Leaue title with Liverpool, a feat Gerrard famously never managed.
"I feel we’re ready. We definitely have the potential to win trophies," Henderson insisted.
"I have every confidence, with the people and talent we’ve got in the dressing-room, that we can produce trophies in the very near future."
