Although the Benito Villamarín responded after last week's derby defeat, Quique Setién's team was not capable of doing so themselves. Betis spent too much of the game playing the ball around without any direction or urgency, and only looked better as the game entered injury time.
Setién's patient approach was trumped by that of Marcelino, who set his team up perfectly to play on the counter-attack against a Betis side that lacked any real penetration.
The first half will certainly not go down in history. Betis passed and passed, but were unable to break down the wall of Valencia. Only on occasion did they make it as far as the penalty area, where either due to their lack of accuracy in attack or Valencia's stubborn defence, the scoreline remained 0-0.
Last season's Guedes returns
Just as the first half seemed destined to finish goalless, a player who has been in inspired form recently reappeared. Guedes got the ball on the edge of the area and squeezed a shot past the Betis defenders that Pau López will be disappointed to have let creep in.
But Guedes wasn't done there. Just after the restart, he made Valencia history by firing home another powerful effort from outside the area - funnily enough, he scored in the exact same minute with a long range righ-footed strike at the Villamarín last season.
Setién tried to change the script of the game as the match wore on. He brought on strikers, took off defenders and pushed his team forward as the tension rose inside the Benito Villamarín. Betis are struggling to pick up points, and are paying for it in every home game.
Valencia managed the game well, but Betis are a team capable of suffocating their opponents with constant pressure at times. They did it after pulling one back from the penalty spot, and Valencia's task got harder still as Rodrigo received a second yellow card which means he will miss next weekend's huge clash against Atlético at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Time was against Setién's side as the crowd let their frustrations be known, aiming chants against their under-fire manager. The last ten minutes must have passed slowly for Valencia, who kept Betis at bay with a deep defensive line and last-ditch defending in and around their own area.
Valencia won the game, and in truth it was 'Los Ché' who wanted the victory more throughout the game. Betis could not recover from the deficit and now sit 9 points away from the European places.
