Pep Guardiola spoke to the media. The Manchester City coach confirmed that he will not be able to count on Agüero or Aymeric Laporte for this Wednesday's match against Aston Villa.

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City's coach, held a press conference in the run-up to the match against Aston Villa, a postponed first-round match to be played on Wednesday 20th January at the Etihad.

Questioned over the situation of Agüero, the Catalan coach confirmed that the Argentine player is still isolating: "Agüero is still isolated, he is not ready for Aston Villa. We need him, we miss him. The numbers speak for themselves, he is the best striker in our history. He can win games on his own and he has been with us for a long time. I don't know how long he has left".

He also reported that Aymeric Laporte still needs to take the last steps before he can return: "Aymeric still needs to take the last steps. He will not be ready by Wednesday, but he is already training with us. Perhaps he will be available on Saturday. We need him. It's up to him to be fit again and join the team, but he has all the qualities. He's the best left-footed centre-back. We cannot play only with John Stones and Rúben Dias. We need also Nathan Aké and Eric Garcia. And we need Laporte.

As for whether his team is a candidate for the title, Guardiola answered: "I don't know what will happen in the future. We weren't candidates three months ago and now we are. The only thing I want is to play a great game and beat Aston Villa".

"We are waiting for the best Aston Villa possible. The most important thing is that they are all healthy and from there we hope for the best. They are not suffering at the bottom of the table, they are a totally different team from last season", he added.
