Grimsby fined for 'improper fielding' but historic EFL Cup win over Man Utd stands

Manchester United endured one of the most embarrassing nights in their recent history when they were knocked out of the first round of the EFL Cup by Grimsby Town, a humble club from the fourth tier of English football. On Tuesday, the match is back in the news due to an infraction committed by the black and whites.
According to the EFL, Grimsby Town have received a £20,000 fine after fielding an ineligible player in the match against Manchester United. The news was initially received with concern, but later with relief.
The organisation has not gone further, so the result of the historic tie is not in danger. The Red Devils have the opportunity to appeal the decision, although 'The Guardian' suggests that they will not go further.
What happened was that Grimsby brought on midfielder Clarke Oduor from the bench. He had just been signed from Bradford City, but was registered for the competition one minute after the permitted deadline.
According to a statement from Grimsby Town, they were the ones who reported the error, showing that there was no malicious intent, which served as a mitigating factor. In fact, the EFL has ruled that the club must pay the first £10,000 of the £20,000 now, while the second £10,000 is conditional on there being no recurrence.
