Germany look to have sunk a long way from their world football domination of previous decades. Not making it out of the group stages of the Qatar World Cup in December, followed by just one win in five friendly matches and most recently a dismal loss against Colombia, have made the calls for change deafening.
Germany's best selling newspaper, 'Bild' have called for manager Hansi Flick to be sacked, and the outlet reflects the angry fans who want him out. The overwhelming favourite to replace him is Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp, but would the Reds' manager come home and leave his club after eight seasons?
'The Athletic' don't think so. The outlet recalls he was offered the same position in his native country in 2021, but turned it down citing his "important role" at Liverpool: "The important thing is I didn’t say that I didn’t want to become a national coach, but that I cannot. That’s a huge difference. There is a very clear commitment. I have an important role here at Liverpool".
That commitment doesn't appear to have changed. Klopp signed a two-year extension last year that keeps him at the club until 2026, and despite Liverpool missing out on Champions League football this season, his lap of appreciation after the final game of last season showed that fans did not harbour ill feelings.
The owners also appear to show complete faith in him, and he has started the transfer window with a clear intention of his rebuild, wrapping up the signing of Argentinian star, Alexis Mac Allister very early in the summer. More defenders and midfielders are expected to follow as the transfer window goes on.
Only 56, it seems that for now at least Klopp's priorities remain with his club, and he will not be riding to Germany's rescue any time soon. However, he seems destined for a return to Germany eventually, and perhaps he'll take on the role then.
