In a press conference that lasted about an hour, Setién spoke about his admiration for Barcelona, and the project he is now taking on, with Bartomeu and Abidal at his side. He is signing a contract until 2022, but he could be leaving by 2021 if the newly elected Barcelona president finds it necessary to replace him.
Here are the standout statements from the press conference.
On Barcelona and coaching Messi
I have enjoyed myself watching Barca and these players over the last few year. I'm still not entirely conscious of what it means to coach the best player in the world. One thing is admiration and another thing is that everyone has to be in their place."
Setien on his philosophy
"There are many things we are clear about and we are going to try to transmit them and make sure they are not just words. The demands and standards of this club ask that of you constantly."
Setien on his CV: "My teams play good football"
Quique Setien was asked about the fact that he has not coached an elite club before, with his experience limited to teams like Lugo, Las Palmas and Real Betis.
"I don't have an extensive CV," he said. "I don't have trophies. But what I have is that I have shown a philosophy that I love. The only thing I have done is to make Betis, Las Palmas and Lugo play really good football."
Setien talks tactics and how Barcelona will play
Asked about the formation he will use, Setien said: "The important thing is the philosophy, to be clear what we are playing at. It's possible we will assess at some point a change with respect to the 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 which has been used lately."
And he added: "But I'll leave it in inverted commas because we need to look at a lot of things. The philosophy doesn't change, but the formation could."
Bartomeu bats off Xavi question
President Josep Maria Bartomeu was asked about Xavi, with whom Barca negotiated prior to signing Setien.
"Quique Setien has a contract until 2022," he said. "But as there are elections in 2021, there's a clause in which the [new] president can make a change."
Ready to give youth a chance
"This club has an extraordinary youth system," he said. "I don't know in depth the majority of the players, but they will come to train and participate. They have to be clear on reaching the first team.
"The talent from the bottom, if they progress, it is because they deserve it. I have an absolute willingness to take care of the boys because whenever a new kid shows up, there is an energy that allows those above to not relax."
Setien: Playing well is best route to victory
"My objective is to win everything I can win. There is no other path but to improve every year and achieve the maximum amount of trophies possible, as well as playing well.
"The best route to victory is playing well. It's important to associate that."
Bartomeu thanks Valverde: "We're friends"
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has thanked former coach Ernesto Valverde after his two-and-a-half-year tenure came to an end.
"I want to thank Valverde for his leaving letter," he said. "That's how he is. A person with great values. We are friends. We are formed a great relationship, he is someone who left his mark."
