Football is a mysterious sport. Roberto Di Matteo ended up being the only coach capable of making Chelsea champions of the Champions League.
The Italian took a team in ruins but still alive on several occasions and obtained two titles, winning the FA Cup and eliminating Barça in the semifinals of the Champions League in a surprising way, defeating Bayern in the final in his own stadium.
Although he initially continued in the blue team, Di Matteo barely lasted a few months and was soon sentenced, having trouble finding a club ever since.
Di Matteo directed Schalke 04 and managed to classify the 'miners' to the Europa League, but did not remain in the Bundesliga after starying away from the vision the club wanted for themselves.
His last experience took place at the Championship in the historic Aston Villa, with Steve Clarke as assistant and unsatisfactory results.
He could now take the place of Clarke, who is leaving Kilmarnock to become Scotland's national team coach, in what would be a further step back in his short coaching career.
Along with Di Matteo, the Uruguayan Gustavo Poyet, another coach who has also lost his spark, is also a candidate to redirect his career in the modest Scottish club.
