While a Sunday League game can see tensions flare at times, things went to another level after Mullingar town played at Horseleap on 11th November.
Four men are alleged to have assaulted referee Daniel Sweeney, breaking his jaw and leading him to be hospitalised and require surgery to correct his injuries.
"All four suspects were detained under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Mullingar, Tullamore and Birr Garda stations," a police spokesman told the 'BBC'.
"The four were released without charge in the early hours of Thursday and a file is to be prepared for director of public prosecutions."
Three players have been given bans of 40 years each by the 'Combined League Counties' in connection with the incident.
