Football revolution: is the team's shield not enough to win anymore?

The five big leagues are more unpredictable than ever. There's been some surprises ('Gladbach, Cagliari, Leicester) or changes of champion in several of them. However, the most eye-catching aspect has been the fact that some of the biggest teams are all in lower standings than expected: Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Tottenham, Napoli, and Lyon are all seventh.

Some consider it an evolution of football; others point to involution. But the truth is that the old football regime has begun to dissipate in recent years. Leicester's Premier League win in 2016 was a warning. Today's reality speaks of another level to the competition.

A year is approaching in which the major leagues could leave another surprise similar to the one given by Ranieri's boys. Will Borussia Monchengladbach's dominance last until the end of the tournament in Germany? Bayern's comeback this weekend could be a warning. Or will RB Leipzig overtake them?

For the positions of Champions from Spain, Germany, France, Italy and England are riding right now teams that were not originally invited to the party. In addition to the Bundesliga, Leicester are second in the Premier League, Cagliari, Real Sociedad and Rennes are fourth in Serie A, La Liga and Ligue 1 respectively.

In addition, clubs such as Sevilla, Lazio, Olympique de Marseille or Schalke 04 are above the current champions of their league or others who a priori are more likely to be in the top positions.

It's a situation that remains unexpected, and teams are struggling to assimilate, as it's always strange to see some of the biggest teams without a spot for the European tournaments.

Big guys in trouble

This is the case with Bayern Munich, Tottenham, Atletico Madrid, Napoli and Olympique Lyon. All of them are in seventh place, which is the first to be left out of European competitions except in the case of France, where this border is the fifth place.

The Bavarian multi-champion, a team that's won the league for seven consecutive years, is seven points behind the title and in the midst of a crisis. Bayern have unrecognisable numbers the same year they've made the largest investments. Tottenham, now entrusted to Mourinho, has passed in a few months from the final of the Champions League to its worst year in Premier League of the last five years.

Napoli are in a similar situation, 17 points away from the Serie A leaders. The Champions zone, eight points away, is also becoming very difficult to replicate. A similar situation for Lyon, a team that in recent years has always been a fixture in the big continental tournament. The shield has ceased to guarantee status.
