Five years since Barca's second treble

BeSoccer by BeSoccer @besoccer_com - 0 489

On 6th June 2015, Barcelona beat Juventus 3-1 and managed to get their second treble in history after winning La Liga and Copa del Rey in the same season. It was the treble involving the 'MSN'.

It is difficult to find in history such a chaotic season with a happy ending. The beginning of Luis Enrique's era at Barcelona, which almost came apart in January 2015, ended with Barca winning the treble just five months later.

Their second treble ever was rounded off on 6th June 2015 and this Saturday is five years since that achievement.

It was a different treble to the one Pep Guardiola won in 2008-09, although there were some exceptions. Both he and Luis Enrique ended up coming off the back of a poor period beforehand, started the campaign poorly and then ended it on fire.

If Pep's Barca sealed the La Liga title with a 2-6 win at the Bernabeu he did not give Man Utd a chance in the Champions League final in Rome, Luis Enrique had a memorable Champions League run. From the last 16 onwards, he beat all the domestic champions.

Luis Enrique's Barca was built on the trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar. The Uruguayan arrived and, despite having to miss a few months due to the biting incident in the World Cup, he spurred on the other two.

Leo had the most complete season of his career after his horrible year under Martino and Neymar finally adapted to European football. He started to become more useful. He did less showboating and was much more clinical than in 2013-14.

A project which could not have come to its end had the board not had patience. In January, before all the success, a spat between Luis Enrique and Messi at Sociedad, nearly ruined everything. Messi was left on the bench and Barca lost.

That caused Zubizarreta and Puyol to leave, but the team picked up and had five unbelievable months to finish.

It was the Barca which saw Messi dribble past Boateng, the Argentine's famous goal versus Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final and the likes of Rakitic, Iniesta and Xavi also shone.

Since then, despite the fact the titles have become less in number, the Catalans are still looking to win the Champions League. They had an amazing campaign last season, but then ruined everything at Anfield. They then lost the Copa del Rey final to Valencia. They cannot win a treble this year around because they are out of the Copa del Rey. That shows how difficult it is to win three trophies in one season.
