The tragedy took place in the Angolan City of Luandu after an African Champions League game.
The home side Primeiro de Agosto were up against TP Mazembe of the DR Congo in the first leg of the quarter final held at the 48,500 capacity Estadio 11 de Novembro.
Unfortunately the stampede took place after officials failed to open access gates after the 0-0 draw. When desperate fans were finally let out, a crush ensued and five people were killed in the disaster, witnesses even alleged that some of the deaths were caused by police horses.
Angola's sports ministry confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday informing the public of their regret that the incident took place. They also confirmed seven injured fans had already been discharged from hospital.
The authorities pointed to the delayed kick off time as a reason for the incident and vowed to set up an enquiry panel to get to the bottom of the events that took palce.
