Ezequiel Garay announces retirement: "The pain prevented me from even walking".

Ezequiel Garay, 34 years old, decided to end his career. Due to an injury that has followed him for the last few years, the defender has decided to end his professional career.

Garay had been without a club since leaving Valencia, but there were still clubs interested in his services. Getafe were recently rumoured as a possible destination for the former Valencia defender. The Argentine confirmed that he is suffering from a hip injury and, for that reason, he has decided to retire. "I would have liked to have retired later, but it wasn't to be. I've been struggling silently with this injury for three years. The pain was so severe that I couldn't even walk at times," he said.

"I have negotiated with different clubs for my return, but I can't... I feel I would be cheating that team, the fans and myself," he continued. "My compromise is to get paid money for nothing, as two out of three games I probably wouldn't be able to play because of my injury. I started my career with honesty and I want to say goodbye in the same way," he added.

Garay thanked all the clubs that gave him the opportunity to play, as well as the Argentina national team. Finally, he dedicated a few words to his wife and children, to whom he will now dedicate all his time.
