Ex-Arsenal, Chelsea & Barca star Fabregas announces retirement

Another one of the greats has announced his retirement. Former Spain international Cesc Fabregas confirmed his retirement on Twitter, posting a tweet and video on Saturday evening.

The 36-year-old came up through the Barcelona academy and moved to Arsenal in 2003 where he played for eight seasons, shining in over 300 appearances for the London side and earning himeself the captaincy. He returned to Barcelona in 2011, where he won two Spanish Super Cups, one Copa del Rey, one UEFA Supercup and a Club World Cup.

In that time, he played for Spain, dominating world football with his country, involved in their 2008 and 2012 Euros wins, and the 2010 World Cup that they took home - still the only one they've managed.

His following seven seasons at Chelsea saw him take two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a Europa League title, before he moved to Monaco and finally Como, where he played his final season.

"After 21 seasons playing professionally, the time has come to hang up my boots", he wrote on Twitter, "I have lifted the World Cup, two European Championships, won everything in England and Spain and almost all the European trophies. It has been a trip impossible to forget".

He thanked his family and reflected on his journey: "All those who have helped me, my teammates, coaches, directors, presidents, owners, fans and my agent. To all my family, from my parents and my sister to my wife and kids, I cherish your advice, mentorship and guidance". 

"To my opponents who tried to knock me, thank you for making me stronger. It has already been more than worth it with all the great memories and friends that I have made on the way", he continued.

"I have learned 3 languages ​​and I can say that it has made me more compassionate and wise. I've had experiences that I never thought in a million years I'd come close to".

He announced he would be coaching Como's B team, a project which he is very excited about: "This charming football team won my heart from the first minute and came to me at the perfect time in my career. I will grab it with both hands".

"So after 20 incredible years full of sacrifice, dedication and joy, it’s time to say thank you and goodbye to the beautiful game. I loved every minute. Cesc", he finished.
