If Baines does indeed have to have yet another ankle operation, it will mean he will have been out of action for over six months when he rejoins Everton.
Back in May, Banes underwent an reformative operation to correct a long-standing problem affecting his left ankle, but Everton fear that he might have to have the same operation following a heavy block this week.
Everton have reported that the England international was defending from a set piece when the impact of the ball unlucky hit him in the area where he was most vulnerable. With his ligaments having only just been strengthened, his ankle gave way and the injury occurred.
The original time it took for his recovery was 12 weeks, so Everton are looking at a minimum of 3 months before they can call his services again.
It will mean that Baines will miss both of England’s Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland next month. It already looks doubtful that he will play in either match against Estonia and Lithuania in October
