Emiliano Martinez sees red, Villa’s Champions League hopes hang in the balance

The final day of the 2024/25 Premier League season is filled with high stakes, particularly in the race for European qualification. Liverpool have already secured the title, but the battle for Champions League spots remains intense from second to eighth place.

At Old Trafford, Aston Villa were dealt a heavy blow when Emiliano Martinez was sent off in first-half stoppage time. The Argentine goalkeeper brought down Hojlund, leaving the referee with no choice but to show a straight red card.

This dismissal forced Unai Emery to make a tactical change, sacrificing Marcos Asensio to bring on substitute goalkeeper Robin Olsen.  Villa, now reduced to ten men, face an uphill struggle as they fight for a Champions League place.
