Not many footballers can say they have been applauded at the Bernabeu while playing for the opposition side. The Italian managed to achieve that on 5th November 2008. As he recalls, it was a great way to round off his career.
Del Piero was coming towards the end of his time as a footballer. He was just a few days short of turning 34. That night he did not only show that class is permanent, but that he was still able to win great things. Bernd Schuster's team were beaten by his quality.
He scored two goals. The first one was a great free-kick; the second was after a powerful run which he finished with a left footed strike from the edge of the area. His goals were the difference on the night.
In the 90th mibnute, Claudio Ranieri took the decision to take off Del Piero. Then a large part of the Bernabeu crowd stood up to applaud him. The Italian, surprised, applauded back.
Very few others can say they have received the same treatment. Andres Iniesta, Ronaldinho and Maradona have, but very few.
