The only reason for the delay in appointing Conte is thought to stem from his contract situation with Chelsea, where he was effectively put on gardening leave in the summer rather than having his contract paid up.
That means that he is technically still under contract with the 'Blues', a deal that must be broken before the Italian can take control at the Bernabeu.
With contract negotiations of that nature a complex and often time-consuming process, 'El Transistor' reports that Real Madrid are also lining up an alternative target in the form of Belgium boss Roberto Martinez.
However, the Spanish giants are thought to be keen to avoid another row with a national side, having caused friction with the Spanish Football Federation after poaching Lopetegui during the summer.
Martinez is believed to have a clause in his contract with Belgium stating that he may not move to manage another international side, though that does potentially leave a switch back to club management on the table.
Nevertheless, Conte remains Madrid's top target, with the former Juve boss thought to feel he has unfinished business at the top level.
