At the time of writing Spurs are only one point behind Liverpool and Manchester City, level on points with Arsenal.
Tottenham are right up there with the teams deemed to be title contenders, in terms of points at least, but they have had a strange start to the season.
Coming off the back of a transfer window where no players were signed, while also facing uncertainty over their stadium, Spurs have performed in fits and starts.
This included a run of three successive defeats in all competitions. However after grinding out three successive Premier League wins they have rallied, but Dier is not getting carried away.
In an interview on 'Spurs TV' he said: "At times things haven't felt very good at the beginning of this season.
"Maybe we're a bit out of touch with reality sometimes. We always want to do better. Overall we've had a really positive start.
"We wanted to start well. In recent years it may be one of the criticisms that we haven't started so well.
"I think we can be happy where we are. We can always do better and now when we get back from international duty there's a chance for us to keep improving."
