Alli, who was the architect, linked up well with Marcus Rashford on the left hand side, before curling a cross towards the back post that could have been a shot, but Danny Welbeck read the play beautifully and headed it home.
The goal came in the 76th minute, just a quarter of an hour after Welbeck had been substituted on for Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.
Welbeck's goal accelerated him to the title of top goal-scorer in the current England squad, having scored eight goals at international level from his previous twelve appearances.
