It took a flash of brilliance from Leroy Sane to ignite this slow-burning tie. The German launched a slalom run and dazzled the statuesque Gunners to find Bernardo Silva on his own. Silva took a touch to dodge a tackle before opening the scoring with a perfectly placed curling effort into the top left corner. 1-0.
Things then went from bad to worse to simply dreadful for Wenger as City scored a quickfire double. Bernardo’s namesake David Silva strode into the box and blasted the ball high past Petr Cech for 2-0. Just five minutes later, Sane joined the parade, latching onto a loose ball in the box and finishing coolly inside the right post to compound Arsenal's misery. ‘0-3’ the scoreboard read as the two teams went down the tunnel at the end of the first half.
The North London side started the second period with intent but, as Wenger learned at Wembley, it's three strikes and you’re out.
When a clumsy Nicolas Otamendi challenge saw Arsenal awarded a penalty, Ederson, a man on a clean sheet mission, dove the right way to deny Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the home side any hope of a comeback.
City then slowed the game down, played keep ball, and toyed with their opposition, making the Gunners look silly in their own backyard. The visitors asserted their dominance on Guardiola’s century game to see out yet another efficient 3-0 victory over Arsenal.
One positive for Wenger is that Arsenal secured a 0-0 draw in the second period - it’s just a shame the final result is calculated by adding the scores of the two halves together. Nul points for the Frenchman.
