Tottenham moved to fifth in the Premier League after beating 10 man Man City in the Premier League. Steven Bergwijn, Tottenham's new signing from PSV made it 1-0 in the 63rd minute after chesting a ball into the box before volleying home. That was three minutes after Zinchenko saw his second yellow of the match for a foul on Winks. The home side made good use of the extra man and Son sealed the deal in the 71st minute after his shot was deflected by Fernandinho and into the goal.
Man City were the better team in the first half and De Bruyne fired wide from a tight angle in the eighth minute before Aguero had two shots blocked by Davinson Sanchez just seconds later. However, things nearly went pear shaped for them inside 15 minutes after Sterling was lucky to only see yellow for a terrible challenge on Dele Alli's ankle. Although Spurs tried to attack, City continued to threaten.
Sergio Aguero hit the post in the 27th minute after trying to beat Lloris at his near post and then ten minutes later, there was controversy. Aurier was brought down in the box by Sergio Aguero, referee Mike Dean said no penalty and played carried on for a good two minutes before the referee gave the spot kick on the advice of the VAR. Gundogan's spot kick was saved and on the rebound, Sterling felt he was brought down by the keeper, but the officials thought otherwise.
A major fight broke out and Zinchenko was one of two players to be booked. That card ended up being costly later on,. Right on half-time, Mahrez passed for Sterling, he squared it for Aguero who fired wide from point blank range when it looked easier to score. Man City would end up ruing all these missed opportunities in the second half.
City had a glorious opportunity three minutes into the second half when first Aguero had an effort cleared off the line following a mix up between Lloris and Tanganga and then Gundogan fired over, but City were no longer dominant in the second period. The turning point came after 60 minutes when City lost the ball from a corner and Harry Winks ran 40 yards before being barged off the ball by Zinchenko. It was the Ukrainian's second yellow of the game and City were reduced to 10 men. Just three minutes later, it got even worse for them.
A corner was taken short, the ball in was only half-cleared by Walker, the delivery back in was chested by Bergwijn before he volleyed it into the corner. It was the dream debut for the Dutchman. Five minutes later, he went off injured after pulling a muscle, but victory was sealed in the 71st minute when Son made it 2-0 with Spurs' second shot on target of the match. Ndombele passed the ball to Son on the edge of the box who turned before seeing his shot deflected by Fernandinho into the goal.
Once it went 2-0, Man City knew the game was up and there was no chance of a fight back. The closest they came was when Davinson Sanchez turned a cross onto his own crossbar right at the end. That perfectly summed up City's afternoon. They did everything except score and they are now 22 points off leaders Liverpool. For Spurs, it was a huge three points to send them fifth just four points off the Champions League places.
