It was a confidence booster for one of the midfielders set to be key in Xavi Hernandez's side. Frenkie de Jong, who has still to show the quality he showed at Ajax, had a great game against Villarreal and topped it off with a goal.
His goal was not an especially nice goal as he just happened to be in the right place at the right time. However, that is something the Dutchman does so well and he is fundamental for the team when the Catalans play the ball out from the back.
The goal ended a seven month goalscoring drought. The midfielder is not a regular goalscorer, but he managed to get seven last term. His last goal came in the Copa del Rey final which saw Barca, then coached by Ronald Koeman, thrash Athletic Bilbao 0-4. The number 21 also gave two assists in that game.
The confidence the goal against Villarreal has given Frenkie de Jong is important. He has started all three games under Xavi so far and the coach has called him an important player in several press conferences. Barca are a much better team when he's playing well.
