English publication 'MailOnline' understands that United CEO Ed Woodward met De Gea's agent Jorge Mendes on Friday, concerning the goalkeeper's contract.
Rather than discuss the future of Jose Mourinho, another client of Mendes, the meeting was intended, from Manchester United's point of view, to secure their number 1's future.
However no agreement was reached, despite a contract offer that would make him the best paid goalkeeper in the world.
The 27 year old is understood to be concerned about committing his long term future to the 'Red Devils', as he is growing tired of the club not seriously challenging for Premier League and Champions League trophies.
United have the option of extending De Gea's deal to June 2020 inserted into his current deal. However it is getting late in the day and the club are getting more worried about losing a prized asset for a reduced fee or on a free transfer.
