New Southampton striker Danny Ings has revealed that he has made what can only be described as an ambitious bet with former Liverpool team mate Mohammed Salah about who will score more goals this season.
The two were close friends during their time together on Merseyside and Ings says that Salah sent him a message after his move to Southampton at the end of the summer window.
Originally speaking to the 'Evening Standard' Ings said: “[We’ve got] a little one. Mo is Mo. One of the best players in the world,” Ings said. “It was more of a bit of banter between us. Mo’s a good friend of mine. Everything he gets he deserves.
“There’s not many more humble players in football. It’s a bit of a laugh. Hopefully, we’ll both score plenty of goals this season.
“Can I beat him? It would be incredible wouldn't’t it? I’m just working every day to improve. I’ve missed a lot of football.
“I wouldn't be stupid enough to put any cash on it! It’s just a bit of banter. People would think I’m mad to take on that bet if there was cash involved. He proposed it on messages when I left.”
Ings later spoke to 'Football Focus' seeking to clarify it was just a little bet between friends, joking that Salah would have to give him half of Egypt if he won whilst if Salah was victorious Ings would only owe him a Costa Coffee.
Although it is unlikely to stay this way throughout the season the players are currently level on 2 goals each.
