One of the most surprising signings so far this season has been Dani Alves' move to Pumas, one of Mexico's most iconic clubs. After being released at the end of his contract with Barcelona, whom he will face in the Gamper, the Brazilian decided to try his hand in Mexican football for the first time.
At almost 40 years of age, his age is a clear handicap and he will always be in the media spotlight for this reason. A former 'Universitario' like Manuel Negrete analysed the incorporation of the full-back and questioned the level he will show on the pitch.
"It helps for Liga MX, for marketing, he is a great player and has great achievements with Barcelona, but as a footballer, a 39-year-old player is not so good in the sporting aspect," he told 'El Universal'.
"There are a lot of 20 and 25 year olds who are pushing forward. Dani Alves is a figurehead and bringing in a name like his is important for any team, today Pumas have him and I hope he does well," he continued.
Finally, Negrete praised the club's work in the transfer market: "The board made a great effort to bring in highly-rated players, I hope it works out and Pumas can do something in the championship, they must think about being champions and that Dani Alves helps his team-mates".
