Cristiano Ronaldo has, for many, gone past Pele's numbers for goals scored in official competitions and that keeps on generating controversy. For Jose Joao Alfatini, better known as Mazzola, that is not right.
The World Cup winner with Brazil in 1958 was quiet critical: "I'd like to know who invented this ranking. Cristiano Ronaldo did not beat anybody, Pele scored 1225 goals in competitive matches, they weren't friendlies are anything like that."
But that was not all. Alfatini said the Portuguese was not as good as other big names. "He will not catch Pele and never be as good as him. In fact, Ronaldo will nunca be as good as Pele, Maradona or Messi. They are the best in the history of football," he said.
Alfatini, a former teammate of Pele, did not hesitate in criticising Ronaldo to defend the Brazilian legend. The controversy will be never ending.
