The Man Utd striker is suspended for the World Cup qualifier away to Azerbaijan on Tuesday after seeing yellow for taking his shirt off and he has now been released by the national team. "Cristiano Ronaldo was excused from the stage of the national team this Thursday. The yellow card seen against Ireland, being the second in this stage of qualification, forces him to fulfil an official game of suspension, which will happen against Azerbaijan," the Portuguese FA said in a statement.
There are some people who suggested that his yellow card was deliberate as that means he will be fresher for his Man Utd return against Newcastle on 11th September. However, it is not known when he will return to United and whether he will return earlier than expected.
The 36 year-old leaves the national team having broken the men's international record for number of goals scored. He now has 111, two more than Iran's Ali Daei.
