Corinthians honour Memphis Depay's historic Netherlands goal record

In a powerful display of international camaraderie, Corinthians on Wednesday lauded their star forward, Memphis Depay. The tribute celebrated his monumental feat of becoming the all-time leading goalscorer for the Netherlands, a record he shattered by netting twice against Lithuania in the recent qualifiers.
The prolific marksman was presented with a special commemorative plaque and a bespoke Corinthians shirt. Adorned with his name and the significant number 52, it proudly signified his historic tally of goals for the Dutch national team.
Club officials, in a moving ceremony, handed the steel plaque to Depay, its inscription resonating in both Portuguese and English: "His career transcends borders and inspires millions of football fans. Today, that history also dons the black and white."
This poignant tribute unfolded moments before a crucial Copa do Brasil clash, where the Albinegro secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Athletico Paranaense, dramatically sealing their place in the semi-finals. Though Depay started the high-stakes encounter, he was substituted at half-time.
Just days earlier, on Sunday, Memphis Depay had etched his name into history, spectacularly dethroning his compatriot Robin van Persie – who concluded his international career with 50 goals – to become the undisputed leading scorer. Depay's two goals not only secured his record but also galvanised the 'Oranje' to a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Lithuania, leaving Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's 42 goals a distant third.
Adding to his remarkable week, Depay also celebrated his first anniversary in Brazilian football on Tuesday. Since his arrival on 9 September 2023, the Dutch sensation has netted 15 goals for Corinthians, playing a pivotal role in their Campeonato Paulista title triumph earlier this March.
