Copa América quarter-finals decided

BeSoccer by BeSoccer @besoccer_com - 0 6,952

With the group stages now done and dusted, the Copa América 2019 quarter-finals have been decided.

All three group stage rounds are now out the way at the Copa América 2019 in Brazil and, due to the rather forgiving format of the competition, only four of the 12 teams involved have been knocked out (Bolivia, Qatar, Ecuador and Japan).

The other eight teams will return for some mouthwatering quarter-final clashes, which get underway as Brazil face Paraguay on Thursday. These are the matchups that we have to look forward to:

Brazil v Paraguay

Despite the absence of talisman Neymar, Brazil remain the favourites to win the tournament that they themselves are hosting. Tite's men are yet to concede a goal and, having scored eight, the only blemish on their record remains the drab draw against Venezuela in the second group game. They arrive to the quarter-finals with the obligation to not only win, but to do so convincingly.

For their part, Peru had to suffer until the last kick of group game action to know their fate, with the draw between Ecuador and Japan proving to be enough to send them through with just two points. Having not won a game at this edition to date, they go into the match as firm underdogs.

Venezuela v Argentina

Venezuela find themselves in one of the most exciting periods of their footballing history. Although the country is the only CONMEBOL nation to never reach a World Cup, their solid Copa América showing has brought back the hope. The 'Vinotinto' are unbeaten following draws with Brazil and Peru and a victory against Bolivia, and will be full of confidence that they can pull of a famous upset in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.

The 'Albiceleste' have once again failed to convince at a major tournament, but did manage to drag themselves through by beating Qatar in their final group stage fixture. Now, Argentina's performances in the knockout rounds will be scrutinised under the microscope, especially considering they managed to win just one of their three group games against outsiders Qatar.

Stadium: Maracana (Rio de Janeiro)

Colombia v Chile

Without a doubt, Colombia are the team that have impressed most so far. They took a clean sweep of wins against Argentina, Paraguay and Qatar, and look particularly dangerous going forward with in-form striker Duvan Zapata leading their line and making the country dream of lifting the Copa América once again.

Chile slipped to second place in their group after conceding a late winner to Edinson Cavani and Uruguay, and have now been punished with a much tougher quarter-final matchup against 'La Cafetera', who are arguably now the favourites (with the exception of Brazil) to win the tournament.

Uruguay v Peru

Uruguay bounced back from their disappointing draw with Japan to snatch a late winner against Chile and take top spot in the group. Suárez, Cavani & Co. are yet to lose a game and want to add to their record Copa América trophy haul of 15.

Peru qualified for the quarter-finals as the best third-placed team of the three groups. Their four points, gained from their win against Bolivia and draw with Venezuela, were enough to see them through, and they will now hope that their World Cup experience will give them the edge in the knockout rounds of the Copa América 2019.
