Controversy in Bergamo: was Freuler right to be sent off?

The Champions League match between Atalanta and Real Madrid included a highly controversial incident. The Italian side were reduced to ten men with less than 20 minutes on the clock. 

In a great move by Zinedine Zidane's men, Real Madrid kept Gasperini's men at bay and, after a move on the left flank, the ball ended up at the feet of Mendy. 

As the Frenchman was close to getting into the area, the Real Madrid footballer touched the ball away from goal and Freuler fouled him. The Atalanta players were expecting a yellow card, but the referee had no hesitation in showing the red. 

The red card upset the Atalanta players. They were protesting while coach Gasperini was sarcastically laughing on the sideline. The red card will certainly lead to plenty of debate, but the Atalanta player will consider himself unlucky.
