Conte: I prefer football to gift shopping at Christmas

The Blues boss has got what he wants this year - a six point lead in the Premier League table - but he won’t have time to hit the stores as he reveals his festive plans

Antonio Conte has admitted he is not big on Christmas presents, but stated that his team can instead look forward to training - on Christmas Day actual - as he anticipates the next round of matches.

The former Juventus boss is used to a break at Christmas, but English football traditionally continues throughout the festive period despite other major leagues having breaks.

And Conte joked that his wife will be better at sorting out his family’s Christmas presents as he gave an insight into how he will celebrate the traditional holiday period.

“I don't like to buy gifts. I don't like this. My wife does this,” Conte said at a press conference at Cobham Training Centre. “She is a fantastic person... there is a substitution for this.

“I don't like going to the shops. My wife spends the right money, not a lot of money. I don't like to shop. I don't like it.”

Conte has recently won back-to-back manager of the month awards as his Chelsea side begins to look unbeatable, winning 11 games on the trot to lead the Premier League standings.

All the same, the squad will be called into a Christmas day training session after having a three-day break ahead of their upcoming match, but Conte believes that him and his family will find time to enjoy time with his family regardless.

“My wife and my daughter will arrive tomorrow to prepare to celebrate Christmas at my house with my brothers, with my parents and the family,” He added. “I think that's very good.

“This is the first experience for me and my family of playing football at this time of year. It can be, and I hope it will be, a fantastic experience.

“It's very strange for us. In this period, we're used to going on holiday for a week. Sometimes we went to Lecce, sometimes in Torino, once we went in Dubai.

“But it's important for me, at Christmas, to stay with my family. You have to celebrate Christmas with the family. It's not important where you stay, but it's important to stay together with your family.”

Conte has lived a charmed life in England so far in his time as Chelsea boss having turned around the club that finished a disappointing tenth last season very quickly.

The lack of a winter break is sometimes cited as a reason for England’s lack of success at international level, but Conte, who was formerly Italy coach, remains positive about experiencing the upcoming busy run of games for his club.

“I heard a lot of coaches saying you should stop and have a winter break. Above all with the national team. Capello always said the lack of a winter break penalised the national team," he said. "It's very difficult to reply to this question.

“To play in this period, the atmosphere we find in this period is very difficult to find in another period. It's fantastic. It's very difficult for me to say if it's positive or negative to play during the Christmas period.

"But for me, it's my first experience and I'm very happy to have this experience.”
