Although Schalke 04 have been less than impressive in their domestic campaign so far, they sit 13th in the Bundesliga table, the Manchester City director has emphasised that his team must not underestimate them.
The German outfit have, in contrast, performed very well in European competition so far this season, and thus, must not be ruled out of shocking the English champions.
Schalke 04 will host the first leg in Gelsenkirchen on 20 february before the return leg takes place at the Etihad Stadium on 12 March. City's director of football was very complimentary of his club's next opponents, as he gave his verdict on the draw immediately after it took place.
Begiristain said: "We have suffered a lot against Hoffenheim in the group phase (a pair of hard-fought 2-1 wins) and we know how hard it is going to be. They are struggling a bit in the league, because maybe they have done very well in the Champions League. He added: "We cannot let them run. We have to be good in the boxes and try to keep control of the game. We will try to keep the ball."
The City chief concluded: "We are happy and confident and the most important thing is that we will try to go through in this competition."
When probed on what City's expectations are in the Champions League this season, the Spaniard gave an honest reponse. He admitted: "I think we have to be close, that is our dream. One day we will be close to the Champions League - as soon as possible! I hope the time is coming."
