The host nation has been one of the surprise teams of the tournament so far, ending their seven-match winless run to record back-to-back victories at this summer's World Cup.
A leading protagonist of Russia's rise to the top has been Cheryshev, who has scored three goals in two games to top the goalscoring charts alongside Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo.
His first outstanding performance came during a 5-0 thrashing of Saudi Arabia, where he found the back of the net twice.
The first started with an incredible dribble before finishing the move with an acute shot which rippled the bottom corner. His second was even better, finding range from outside the area.
Then on Tuesday evening, Russia faced an Egypt side boosted by the return of talisman Mohamed Salah.
However, they still couldn't pass the tough European side, with Cheryshev winning the Man of the Match prize again with his third goal of the tournament.
It means the midfielder has completed the feat of scoring more goals in two World Cup matches than in the 35 he played in the past two seasons for Villarreal.
It seems a new Cheryshev has been born in Russia and if he keeps up these performances, there will no doubt be a considerable amount of interest about his future.
