60 year old Colin Wing was caught on camera shouting at England international Sterling during the top of the table Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge last weekend, as the player looked to retrieve the ball from behind the goalline.
However, while Wing admits to swearing at Sterling, he has denied that the insults he hurled at the player were of a racist nature.
Wing did admit that while his behaviour 'was completely out of order', he aimed the word 'Manc' not 'black' at the City forward.
After the incident, Sterling took to social media to give his account of the events, and also to highlight the varied representations of white and black footballers by the media.
Many organisations within and surrounding the game have also spoken out in defence of the City star, with the PFA voicing their support for the Englishman, and 'Kick it Out' condemning the abuse that still exists in society today.
Wing is one of four fans that have been banned by Chelsea and are currently being investigated by the Metropolitan police, although no arrests have been made as of yet.
The man lost his job as well as his season ticket to Chelsea, and has since told the 'Daily Mail' of his disgust at his own actions.
He said: "I'm deeply ashamed by my own behaviour. I want to apologise unreservedly to Raheem and hope he can be a better man than I am by accepting it. Even if it wasn't racist, it's not right what I said. Even the swearing is bad - but I got carried away. I was completely out of order."
Wing continued: "I've been going to Chelsea for 50 years now and, because of where I sit, I'm picked up on the camera most weeks. If I had a history of saying this sort of thing I would've been caught by now."
The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
