Chelsea went all out. During the January transfer window, they spent almost €700 million, €680 million to be exact. It was truly mind-blowing.
PSV Sporting Director Marcel Brands explained to the club media why they decided to sell Noni Madueke to the Blues. "I said to his father literally: 'This January, no. But then the offers started to arrive...", he commented.
Chelsea went crazy and PSV did not have any choice other than to give in: "First they offered €25 million, then another for 28, then 32, then 35... Then they were getting close to €40 million and we wondered if we should keep him".
PSV knew he wanted to play in the Premier League and, after never-ending offers, they ended up opening the door for him: "We knew about his personal situation and how much he wanted to return to England".
Marcel Brands did not explain how Chelsea managed to invest so much money in Noni Madueke and others recently. "Chelsea's new owners starting to spend money like that is completely out of proportion...", he said as a way to finish.
