The UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, gave an interview to the Italian paper 'La Repubblica' and defended himself from the criticism which came about as a result of the Champions League match between Atalanta and Valencia.

On 19th February, Atalanta and Valencia faced off in the Champions League last 16 first leg. A match which ended 4-1 to the Italian side, but the scoreline later became rather unimportant.

The game took place in Milan, not far away from the COVID-19 epicentre in Beregamo. The mayor for Bergamo later called the hosting of that game with spectators as a "biological bomb."

The encounter received tons of criticism and the UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, defended himself in an interview with 'La Repubblica'. "Nobody knew then that what happened in Lombardy would lead to a massive outbreak. We always followed the advice of the authorities and we ccould not do anything."

The Slovenian also talked about the second leg at the Mestalla behind closed doors. "Decisions cannot be made in a day. There are contracts and agreements we have to stick to. Football was still going on in the whole of Europe. The borders were still open. On the fact fans have congregated outside the stadium is the responsibility of the Spanish authorities," he said.
