When the news broke that Neymar would have to undergo surgery on his broken foot, hearts sunk in Paris. The Brazilian, who faces up to three months on the sidelines, has scored 29 goals in 30 appearances for PSG so far this season, and is the centrepiece of Unai Emery's team.
When he signed from Barcelona last summer, breaking the world record transfer fee with his £198m price tag, it was clear that the French side had Champions League ambitions. These ambitions took a blow when PSG lost 3-1 in the first leg of their round of 16 tie with Real Madrid, and a further blow when Neymar was ruled out of the second leg clash.
However, with the Brazilian dynamo unavailable for the game, the focus has shifted to PSG's second marquee signing last summer, Kylian Mbappe. Although the transfer doesn't technically go through until this summer, Mbappe commanded a fee of £166m, making him the most expensive teenager of all time. Despite this eye-watering fee, Mbappe has been very much living in Neymar's shadow this season so far, with the ex-Barcelona man hogging the limelight.
Mbappe, who was recently passed fit, now has a chance to take centre-stage on Tuesday, with PSG looking for inspiration to overturn a two goal deficit. Thankfully, this is something the Frenchman has a bit of experience with. Before his move to Paris, Mbappe made waves with Monaco, when the Ligue 1 team came back from a 5-3 first-leg defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League last 16. Monaco won the second leg 3-0 to progress to the quarter finals, and Mbappe's goals in both legs made him instrumental in the comeback.
Despite being just 19 years of age, the teenager has continued to demonstrate his big-game ability this season with his new side PSG. The Frenchman recently became the youngest ever scorer in the 'Classique' derby between PSG and Marseille, and he has also surpassed Lionel Messi and Karim Benzema to become the youngest player to reach 10 goals in the Champions League. Mbappe has played a big role in his side's UCL campaign so far, recording two assists in PSG's 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in the group stages, but can he send them through to the quarters? We will find out on Tuesday night.
