Cahill watched on from the bench as his side come agonisingly close to getting to a first World Cup final in 52 years, losing out ot Croatia thanks to a Mario Mandzuckic strike in extra-time.
Speaking at the end of the game, the player who has been capped by his nation 61 times, spoke of his disappointment at missing out on the opportunity to play France in Sunday's final.
"Everyone is gutted, everyone is upset - unless you win this tournament there's always going to be a bad feeling when you go out, whatever stage it is," the experienced international said.
"We just fell short at the second to last hurdle but as a team we should be very proud of ourselves and, for me, looking at that young squad, we should just feel positive about the future."
The centre-back could feature in England's third placed play-off against Belgium, with many of the England players looking exhausted after their 120 minute game against Croatia.
Cahill also confirmed that he will hold talks with the England manager Gareth Southgate following the team's return from Russia over his international future.
" I can finish my England career knowing I've played every possible fixture I can play in the times I've been selected." he explained.
