The 'Black Cats' have faced a nightmare last two seasons after being relegated twice to find themselves in the third tier of the English game.
Cattermole is one of their highest earners, getting roughly £40,000 per week, and as a result is wanted to be moved on the club's hierarchy so that they can remain financially stable in League One.
Fortunately for the north-east English side, one of their former managers is keen on bringing Cattermole in on a loan deal.
Gus Poyet worked with the midfielder at the Stadium of Light between 2013 and 2015, and is keen to bring him to Bordeaux where he has been in charge since January.
Despite the player and clubs wanting a deal to go through, the wage bill could be stumbling block as Bordeaux are unwilling to pay his wages in full.
The loan market will shut on 31st August, after the transfer market in England closed on 9th August.
