The Irish international has spent his whole career in the Premier League. He turned professional in 2005 and broke through at Manchester City before their take over.
He has spent the last four and a half seasons at Stoke, but was released by the 'Potters' after their relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2017/18 season.
He will now join up with fellow Championship side Bolton Wanderers. Speaking about his signing, their manager Phil parkinson said:
"Although he's got a bit to do in terms of match fitness, we've got a lot of games coming up and I'm sure he will make a positive contribution,".
Bolton currently sit in 16th in the English second tier.
